Oct. 3-7
We are excited to start our first Academy classes this week on Friday. The children were given a choice sheet to choose their 3 most favorite academies. Each child is going to be placed for a duration of 45 minutes in an academy of their choice to explore and enrich their learning. The academies are a fun and engaging way for children to explore different cultures around the world, do hands on activities, and learn beyond their grade level curriculum. We are as much excited as the children are and can't wait for this great learning to happen in our classrooms!

GROWTH MINDSET
This week in growth mindset, we are going to talk about the importance of showing perseverance, and being persistent. Sometimes, when we try out something new, or take a risk, things won't go the way we thought it would. We might feel we have failed and for this reason, we are afraid to try again. Starting today and for the rest of our lives, we are going to be persistent, and don't let our failures prevent us from trying again and again. We will keep moving forward!

This week:
READING
This week in reading we will learn about a strategy that helps us to understand the book better and be a stronger reader. We will learn to make connections between the story and any prior knowledge that we might have. Making connections help us to stay focused on the story, and understand the characters and the world in the story better. There are three different types of connections: text to self (when we make connections between us and the book), text to text (when one story reminds us of another story), and text to the world (when we make a connection between the text and the world around us).

WRITING
We are almost done with revising our stories. The children have done a fantastic job writing true stories about their lives. Ask them what revising means and they should be able to tell you what they need to do when they revise a story. This week we will do some fun writing activities such as retelling the beginning, middle and ending of a story that we read together as a class in our own words. As a class, we read the story" Sylvester and the Magic Pebble". The children will draw a favorite part of the story and retell the story with a beginning, middle, and ending.
We will continue working on count-on addition and this week we will focus on count on 2 and count on 3 addition. We will learn about commutative/turn around property of addition and apply our knowledge in addition problem solving and playing some fun,
card and board games.
card and board games.
SOCIAL STUDIES
This week in social studies we will learn about the leaders and authority figures at home, school, and community. We will also learn about our national patriotic symbols such as the United States flag, and the statue of liberty.
